Summerland resident tops half-marathon, while Banff runner wins the 10K race

Summerland’s Michael Owen clocked a time of 1 hours, 24 minutes and 54 seconds to top the halfmarath­on event at the 19th annual Peach City Half Marathon and 10K on Sunday in Penticton.

Theo Engman of Banff, Alta., won the 10K race in 38 minutes and 32 seconds.

Owen was racing in the men’s 30-34 category and Engman was in men’s 20-29.

A total of 109 competitor­s completed the halfmarath­on (21.2 km) and 82 finished the 10K race, which started Skaha Lake Park and finished up at Skaha Beach next to the volleyball courts.

HALF MARATHON: Kathryn Waslen of Calgary finished second overall and was the top female in 1:26:59, while Marcus Merryfield of Victoria (1:27:31), Samuel Lazar of Salmon Arm (1:27:48) and Tristan Sjoden of Grand Forks (1:31:55) rounded out the top five.

Traci Bourne of Penticton was the top local female finisher, coming 37th overall in 1:57:52.

Other top local finishers and their times were: 6th, Phillipp Stehle (Penticton), 1:33:12; 9th, Ash Davidson, Pent., 1:44:31; 16th, Blair Noel, Pent., 1:47:43.

33rd, Michael Shannon, Pent., 1:55:05; 39th, Kelly Lebrekmo, Pent.; 1:58:22; 42nd, Spencer Frost, Pent., 1:58:46; 43rd, Donna Maurkewich, Pent., 1:59:14; 45th, Amy Cook, Pent., 1:59:39; 47th, Leah Mottershea­d, Penticton, 2:00:29; 48th, Petra Frost, Pent., 2:00:49 (1st in women’s 45-49).

10K RACE: Rounding out the top five were Chris Swift of Castlegar at 39:51, Phil Bouffard of Kamloops at 40:09, Trish Stathers of Kamloops at 40:49 (top overall female) and Eli Grant of Penticton as the top local finisher and winner of men’s 19-and-under age group in 41:26.

Jan Rempel of Penticton was the top local female, coming 27th overall in 54:55.
