The history of terror in England
Dear Editor: I read in Saturday Okanagan the article by the Associated Press where Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said terror attacks in Britain are our own fault.
History of bombings in Britain go back more than 20 years ago by the IRA Irish Republican Army terrorist bombings (1993 Bishops bombing in London.) The terrorists from countries abroad have studied the method of the IRA bombing techniques, now with more sophisticated suicide backpacks resulting with more media news of unfortunate civilian casualties. Penticton Geller, who gave a speech at SFU noting any land zoned multi for townhouses or duplexes can quite simply be converted to a fee simple property by the addition of two adjacent party walls between the units with approximate 2-inch airspace in between.
Builders can and should be amenable to making these adjustments to their plans when they seek multiple variances from City Hall for the projects they build.
This was certainly the case at the Penticton Council meeting (Herald, May 25) when a builder requested several amendments to a pair of duplexes on Government Street that many adjacent home owners were opposing. Originally misrepresented as affordable housing when under question by Coun. Campbell Watt it became clear that this project in the range of $300,000 were starter units not affordable housing. Why force home owners into communal units when fee simple can be set up to work in the better interests of the individual homeowners?
While the inside of these units can be standard many ideas are out there to make the individual outward appearance of these units varied to conform to individual tastes. Regulations can be put in place similar to housing developments that protect the interests of all homeowners involved.
When builders don’t take the time or trouble to care what they saddle owners with for the next 50 years it is past time that city council pulled up their boot straps and began working on behalf of the citizens of Penticton. Elvena Slump Penticton
