$6.4 million spent on salaries

Elected officials made total of $103,492 in 2016, statement shows

SUMMERLAND — The District of Summerland spent $6.4 million on remunerati­on including taxable benefits for elected officials and employees last year.

The informatio­n was contained in the 2016 statement of financial informatio­n presented to council Monday by director of finance David Svetlichny.

Mayor Peter Waterman received $28, 324 and each of the six councillor­s $12,528 for a total of $103,492 in remunerati­on for elected officials. The councillor­s and mayor claimed a total of $26,592 in expenses.

Coun. Janet Peake received the most at $6,920 followed by Coun. Richard Barkwill at $5,235. Both Peake and Barkwill travelled to Summerland­ís sister city, Toyokoro, Japan last fall.

Councillor­s Erin Carlson and Erin Trainer had the smallest expense claims at $1,934 and $1,868, respective­ly.

Waterman received $4,748 for his expenses.

The 28 employees with remunerati­on greater than $75,000 were paid a total of $2.6 million and received $47,332 for expenses.

There was an increase of one employee in this category over 2015.

Eight employees received more than $100,000 and five between $90,000 and $99,000.

Chief administra­tive officer Linda Tynan had the highest expense claim at $7,561 followed by the manager of financial services at $4,170.

The total for employees with remunerati­on less than $75,000 was $3.7 million. Their expenses totalled $30,485. There were no severance agreements made between the district and its nonunioniz­ed employees during 2016.

Statements of financial informatio­n are required to be published every year by public sector agencies. They list each employee who made over $75,000, plus contracts worth over $25,000 and the wages and expenses of elected officials.
