Beach cleanup on this morning

-

Another community beach cleanup has been scheduled for this morning in Penticton.

Anyone interested in helping to tidy the flood-stricken Okanagan Lake shoreline downtown is asked to meet at 9:45 a.m. at the corner of Lakeshore Drive and Power Street for the two-hour work bee.

Volunteers should bring gloves, and closed-toed shoes, plus rakes, shovels and wheelbarrows if possible.

The event follows on a similar cleanup last week at Marina Way Beach.

New face at elementary school

A school administrator from Surrey has been tapped to replace a popular vice-principal at Columbia Elementary School in Penticton.

Carla Krekic will take the reins Aug. 1, after leaving her post at Kirkbride Elementary, the Okanagan Skaha School District announced this week.

She’s taking over from Kent Percevault, who earlier this year learned his contract wasn’t being renewed. The school district has refused to tell him and the public why, leading to an outcry from parents, who unsuccessfully fought to have him reinstated.

The district also announced this week that Kirsten Odian will become vice-principal of Giant’s Head Elementary effective Aug. 1.

Meanwhile, Steve Cann has been appointed principal of the international student program.

He’s currently working as viceprincipal of Glenrosa Middle School in West Kelowna. Other jobs on his resume include viceprincipal of Mount Boucherie Secondary and international program co-ordinator for the Vernon School District.

Cann will be replacing Jeff Guy, who’s retiring Aug. 31.
