Great work by fire crews

-

Dear Editor: I’d like to recognize the fine efforts of all first responders in dealing with the Kaleden wildfire on July 4.

Although we were not in harm’s way, we did have a ringside seat from which to observe the operations of the emergency services which were involved.

The fire retardant bombers and helicopter crews were especially effective in containing the fire and minimizing the extent of damage. If anyone put it on the line that day it was the bomber crews and the people flying the spotter plane to direct the air operations.

It takes tremendous skill and focus to maneuver in a constricted valley and to decide on the unforgiving angles of attack required to drop their loads on target at low altitude while avoiding the surrounding terrain.

I’ve seen airstrikes with rockets and bombs which were directed at destroying lives and facilities so it was wonderful to see such an impressive effort being focused on saving lives and property. What an amazing capability to have. These people and their aircraft are worth every dollar we spend on them, and more. Bravo Zulu!

While we don’t know the cause of this fire yet, the location where it appears to have taken hold was all too predictable. It was an unoccupied and unmaintained property loaded with dry undergrowth and trees. It’s going to be a long, dry fire season this year, so property owners need to pay attention to this. Kaleden be verified), $18 billion deficit while the Conservatives claim to have left them with a modest surplus.

The day of reckoning will come when interest rates return to historically normal levels. It is little wonder that it is often said that the term “honest politician” is an oxymoron, and there is so little confidence in our politicians and governments.

Maybe this is the reason why so many people cannot be bothered to vote.

What difference would it make? They are all the same. John Baker
