Glenfir School wants to add dorm

- By SUSAN McIVER

Summerland — Council will consider an application tonight from the proposed purchasers of Glenfir School to add a dormitory as a permitted use in the institutional zone.

If the proposed bylaw amendment is given second reading, a public hearing will be held on Aug. 14.

Stratford Hall, a non-denominational, independent K-12 school in Vancouver, is interested in buying Glenfir School and reopening it as an international school.

The construction of a 200-unit dormitory is proposed.

Later, director of development services Dean Strachan will present an update on the proposed Banks Crescent development.

His report will include correspondence received from the applicants, the Lark Group, and the Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. regarding information on water temperature data and other information related to the proposed deep water lake as a contingency water source for the Summerland Trout Hatchery.

Eight additional pages of the petition to stop the Banks Crescent development will also be presented to council.

Signatures on these pages bring the total number of individuals who have signed both the hard copy and online forms of the petition to 2,528.

Council will receive a report from director of works and utilities director Kris Johnson on the contract tender results for the Giant’s Head Road upgrades project.

Staff are asking for authorization to negotiate with Waste Connections of Canada for the provision of services regarding collection of garbage, recycling, compostable materials and large items for a term of seven years starting July 1 2018.

The staff recommendation to support the Trail of the Okanagans Society—Wayfinding project will come before council, which will also consider assisting the project with funds for materials and labour to be allocated from the existing 2017 parks maintenance budget.
