Refresher for Dan Albas

-

Dear Editor: While I agree with Dan Albas’s claim that restrictions disallowing credit unions from using the terms “bank” or “banking” will have a negative impact on credit unions, he failed to mention that the law being applied (section 983.1 of the Bank Act) is not new, and was in place throughout the last 10 years of Conservative government.

The OFSI (Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions) is an independent organization created by government in 1983, and has now chosen to enforce those regulations.

Let’s not forget that Mr. Albas was a Conservative MP in 2013 when the Harper Government axed the long-standing tax benefit for credit unions, threatening the viability of many small and medium sized credit unions within communities.

If people would like to lobby against the new rules imposed on Credit Unions by OFSI, they may to do so by sending their arguments to Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, at information@osfibsif.gc.ca or P.O. To the city I say have some respect for beaches and parks. Please! No more trashy novelty tents, and while you are at it, how about returning The Peach to its original role of providing tourist information.

We did not come to Penticton to buy frozen sugar drinks at the city's most prominent icon, nor cheap wraps and toys from intrusive tent hucksters. Ken Johnson
