Trudeau Liberals: big-bank friendly

-

Dear Editor: I read with interest the letter from former federal Liberal candidate Connie Denesiuk defending the Trudeau Liberals recent attack on Credit Unions that will restrict them from using terms such as “bank, banker, banking” (Herald, July 18).

Mrs. Denesiuk’s defence is common to the tactics of Trudeau Liberals in Ottawa as well; blame someone else for Liberal inaction. In this case Mrs. Denesiuk suggests that the Bank Act could have been modified during the time Prime Minister Harper was in power. This same logic could also apply to former Liberal Prime Ministers Paul Martin and Jean Chrétien who also failed to make these changes when they were in power.

The point overlooked by Mrs. Denesiuk was that there was no established need at that time. It was only under the big bank friendly Trudeau Liberal Government that credit unions have now come under attack.

While Mrs. Denesiuk also attempts to shuffle blame off the Liberal Government onto the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OFSI) the reality is the majority Trudeau Liberal Government has the power to amend the Bank Act to prevent the long arm of Ottawa bureaucracy from attacking our credit unions.

Ironically Mrs. Denesiuk criticizes the former Conservative Government for not changing the Bank Act while being silent on the fact that this is precisely what the current Trudeau Liberal Government should be doing.

This is the worst kind of partisan politics and raises the question why Mrs. Denesiuk is not supporting local credit unions and their members and instead chooses to stand with Trudeau Liberals and over-reaching Ottawa bureaucracy.

After hearing a loud outcry from many citizens opposing these draconian restrictions that only occurred under the Trudeau Liberal Government it is my intention to introduce a private member’s bill to amend the Bank Act and stop this Ottawa sanctioned attack on Canada’s credit unions and caisses populaires.
