Life is Strange episodes

- SASCHA HEIST

With a new installment in the Life is Strange series out, let’s look at what made the series such a hit. Life is Strange is the latest episodic title to hit the download store. This is the best reason to try this new game format. Strange has a hand-drawn look to the environment. All the environments are beautifully detailed. All the places you visit from the halls and classrooms of the school to your friend’s house have a great look to them.

The sound track deserves a special mention as the music is perfectly chosen for each different situation and lends itself perfectly to the games mood. You play the game as a teenage girl called Max Caulfield.

Max is a photography student in a private school in her hometown in Oregon. The game shows the trials and turmoil this teenager girl has to face on a daily basis. This is a typical teenager that doesn’t quite fit in. I think we all can relate to being the odd one in the class.

You have to deal with snotty kids, over-privileged jocks and the general awkwardness of teenage life. You quickly realize that Max is more special then you may have first thought. Max can manipulate time, letting you rewind time at anytime.

The time manipulation can come in handy in general events throughout the story or even in conversations. The game plays the same as other adventure titles. You control the character with the left thumbstick and can interact with the different environmental objects. This isn’t the general game that has you facing action moment after action moment. As Max you navigate her school while interacting with students through choice-driven dialogue.

This game has you using your powers in conversations giving you the upper hand as you know what that person said to a certain response. I have to commend the developer for sticking to story perspective as a teenage girl. You really start to feel for Max and those she cares for.

Now don’t think this is a general story based on romance as it is anything but. I really want to talk about the story as there are lots of moments that will shock you. This story needs to be experienced.

This game has more drama and even a few action moments creating a well-rounded and thought-out story. This is only the first episode and if the other four follow this episode, the developer has a hit on their hands. For $5, this is a no-brainer. Download it now. Sascha Heist is a Penticton gamer.
