Hopkins defends Penticton Open men’s golf title

Penticton’s Matt Hopkins breezed to an eight-shot win in successful­ly defending his Jackson Triggs Penticton Open men’s golf championsh­ip at the Penticton Golf and Country Club.

Hopkins blazed out of the gate with a 64 on Thursday and followed it up with rounds of 72 and 68 to finish at six-under-par 204 in the 59th annual competitio­n.

Owen McCarthy of Edmonton finished runner-up in the 54-hole event at two-over 212, with Travis Miller of Penticton and Rob Tadey of Fairview Mountain (Oliver) coming in at 213.

Moez Noorani of the Westwood Plateau club in Coquitlam took the overall low net by countback at 201.

Johnny Audia of Calgary produced the shot of the tournament with a hole-in-one on the par-3, 13th hole in the final round on Saturday.

Low gross and net flight winners and runners-up are as follows:

DIVISION 1 (4-7 handicap): Gross, Travis Miller, 213 (countback); Rob Tadey, 213.

Net, Dean Bates, Penticton, 206 (countback); Dave Hewer, Penticton, 206.

DIVISION 2 (8-10 handicap): Gross, Ken Anderson, Penticton, 235; Steve Smith, Delta, 236.

Net, Bobby Sasyniuk, Lynx Ridge, Calgary, 208; Ken Nickel, Penticton, 209.

DIVISION 3 (11-16 handicap): Gross, Wendell Clark, Penticton 240; Sean Maurer, Beach Grove, Delta, 244 (countback).

Net, Malcolm Clough, Penticton, 201; Gary Apolzer, Penticton, 205.

DIVISION 4 (17-plus handicap): Gross, Alvin Lalonde, Penticton, 257; Terry MacDermott, Penticton, 264.

Net, Jeff Clayton, Pacific GC, 203; Art Moore, Penticton, 208 (countback).

TWIN SENIORS: The Reid Sutherland foursome logged a 131 to win the Twin Lakes Golf Resort senior men’s day “1 low net and 1 low gross” outing on Tuesday.

Other members of the team were Red Bosscha, Lou Brulotte and Doug Laisi.

Second place, by countback at 133, went to Bruce Anderson, Mitch Netterfiel­d and Jack Kinnbough.

Settling for third were Cory Caplette, Doug Coulter and Chuck Clubine.

Robert Biro notched closest to the pin on No. 2, Mitch Netterfiel­d on No. 8 and Sutherland on No. 14 had long putts, while Sutherland, Dueane Sly and Larry Thompson carded deuces.

SUMMERLAND LADIES: Lil Smith collected 35 points to win the first flight at the Summerland Golf and Country Club ladies’ “Stableford” event.

Vi Ward at 41 and Gwen Redfern at 35 topped the second flight, while Pat Stohl at 38 and Helen Benallick at 36 led the way in the third flight.

SENIOR MEN: Ken Robertson logged a 66 to take the overall low net at the Summerland Golf and Country Club senior men’s day “all net scores” event.

Herb Williams was runner-up to Robertson overall and in the third flight at 68.

Don Parrot topped the first flight at 70 and Eric Johnson was best in the second flight at 69.

Parrott, Robertson, Johnson and Al Thomas shared the deuce pot.
