On the cover of the Rolling Stone

-

Dear Editor: Your opinion page last week contained a letter expressing dislike for Justin Trudeau because of his appearance.

As it is unfair to reject an individual for ugly visage it is also unfair to reject another for an attractive visage. As a voting citizen my requirements included diplomatic, strong, and honest as starters and — unlike his southern counterpart — Trudeau comes up in spades with all of these and many more.

Now Rolling Stone magazine is praising Trudeau wishing “Why Can’t He Be Our President?” Instead of having a leader who mocks science; who mocks women; who mocks religions and races; they would love to have a leader who embraces reality, women, religions and all races. We Canadians should be thankful not jealous and bitter.

Andrew MacDougall in today’s opinion in another paper “threw stones” at Trudeau saying he’s not “the saviour of the Western world.” Maybe not; maybe in the future; who said he was anyway? But for Canadians he’s doing just fine. MacDougall used to be Stephen Harper’s director of communications. Maybe he hasn’t yet overcome that horrible loss.

Mr. MacDougall goes on to say Harper would never have wanted to be written about in the way Trudeau has been in Rolling Stone magazine. Well that may explain why Harper’s out and Trudeau’s in; this message in that media is strong and it will echo throughout Europe.

Some mock Trudeau saying the Rolling Stone article will polarize Trump against Trudeau. They grasp at straws in their jealousy. Besides I expect through NAFTA talks the leader of “Make America Great Again” is already focused on trumping Canada in talks. I have faith Trudeau and his team will “deep six” that. I wouldn’t care if he looked like Gollum, he’d still look good on the cover of the Rolling Stone.

And to today’s “Trump Gets Things Done” letter by Bob Sherman (Herald, July 27), yes, Trump partially undid a ban he made against Muslims to allow a small preferential group through, but what about the thousands he’s stopped from getting to their families, jobs and homes?

What about their careers and the aspirations of current students? He’s good though with reducing taxes to the rich, I’ll give him that. Anything else like health: his objective is to destroy “Obamacare” because it was implemented by another party and it allows 20 million more, including poor, to obtain healthcare. Donald Lawlor
