Council will provide letters of support

-

Summerland Council agreed Monday to supply the Summerland Food Bank & Resource Centre with letters of support to accompany applications for funds.

The centre will request funds from the Provincial Government, Work BC Community Employer Partnership program to continue its Odd Job Program.

“Our grant would request approximately $8,000 to cover the salary of a program co-ordinator next year,” food bank and resource centre president John Bubb wrote in his letter to council.

In the summer of 2016, the centre initiated the program to match its low-income clients with odd jobs in the community.

The program was so successful that this year the centre’s board allocated $7,000 to hire a summer program coordinator.

“In addition to managing the program, our coordinator attends the Tuesday and Sunday markets to promote the program, and is developing marketing materials for the future of the program,” food bank and resource centre president John Bubb wrote to council.

Bubb also wrote that without some form of grant the centre will not likely be able to continue the program.

In addition Bubb will be applying for a Community Gaming Grant for continuing support of the food bank and resource centre’s other activities.
