Misunderstands real democracy
Dear Editor: Anyone with a semblance of discernment upon reading the guest editorial “What happened to democracy?” (Herald, Aug. 11) has got to be questioning the juvenile analysis of world events offered by the Waterloo Regional Record.
To portray the complex geopolitics of our troubled world in such facile terms serves no purpose in maintaining or advancing true democracy.
To address this editorial’s condemnation of the elected leaders of the nations of Venezuela, Turkey, the Philippines, of course Russia, and to a lesser degree the United States and China, would require specific and a necessary lengthy response not suitable to this format.
So briefly stated then, any leader of a sovereign nation that rejects the economically, ethically and morally bankrupt hegemon of the desperate British/US/NATO axis is un-Democratic.
Any sovereign nation that is open to participating in the new paradigm of the Chinese-initiated Belt and Road Initiative for global peace through global development extended to all nations, is in the dying Empire’s crosshairs for violent colour revolutions and coups, economic sanctions and military intervention.
The castigation of Philippine President Duterte’s intention to “bomb Indigenous Pilipino schools for allegedly turning out communists” is such out of context, over-the-top hyperbole it is laughable.
The editorial bemoans that “Democracy is in retreat around the world.” What about the Democracy that the British/ U.S./NATO axis’ bombing and murder brought to Iraq because of British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s lies of Niger Yellowcake and WMD?
What about the glorious democracy that the British/US/NATO axis’ bombing and murder brought to Libya?
Under the dictator Gaddafi, Libya was the most progressive and stalwart state on the African continent standing against terrorism and for the development of the sub-Saharan region of Africa.
What about the British/U.S./NATO bombing and murder in Syria? After all dictator President Assad was elected by a large majority last election — not quite the right kind of democracy.
What about the British/U.S./NATO axis’ ally, that paragon of human rights, the Saudi Monarchy and their genocidal bombing and murder campaign to bring Democracy to Yemen.
It is probably best for the editorial board of the Waterloo Regional Record to leave this important democracy stuff to the real professionals like the Washington Post, London Economist and CNN. Brian Gray Penticton
