We don’t win by insulting Trump

-

Dear Editor: Neil Godbout’s diatribe about President Donald Trump is simply outrageous (Herald opinion page, Aug. 25). Most people would agree that the president is brash and boastful. In many ways, he seems to fit the description of an ugly American.

He is, however, the president of the United States, even if Godbout and other socialists don’t like it. Many in the American media are doing everything they can do destroy the presidency. Fake news, hyperbole and lies are routine now and these same feelings have crept into Canadian journalism too.

We have the “me too” disease of one upmanship. Mr. Godbout’s assertion states that the president is stupid and ignorant. Obviously, that cannot be a true statement and, hence, is a lie.

On the “letters” page near Godbout’s rant is a letter to the editor saying, “Let’s make U.S. visitors welcome.” I could not agree more. Penticton is a tourist town. Canada wins nothing by insulting the president. Douglas A. Dewar

When I pointed this fact out to a lady whose dog had just squatted and peed in front of us, she totally ignored me. I should have threatened her with calling the bylaw enforcement, but I didn’t want to create a big scene.

This particular dog was on the beach all day and I’m sure it peed several times on the sand. I don’t mind so much if the dog owner just brings the dog down to the water for a quick swim then leaves, but to have your dog on a public beach all day is just not cool.

My children played in this sand and one day my grandchildren will do the same. I do not want them to be sitting in and handling dog urine. Penticton needs to have at least a regular patrol by a bylaw officer to ensure people are obeying the law by not having their dogs on the beach.

There is a perfectly good dog beach on Okanagan for this purpose. If the health and welfare of our children is not important enough to ensure that adults are obeying the law, then what is?
