The Elite division competitor­s made up just a fraction of the field in Sunday’s longdistan­ce triathlon event as the inaugural 10-day ITU Multisport World Championsh­ip Festival wrapped up in Penticton.

A total of 821 athletes (487 men and 334 women) took part in the Age Group race, along with another 37 in the Open Wave category, as well as three Para-triathlete­s. The course consisted of a 3 km swim, 120 km bike and 30 km run.

In the men’s Age Group race, Canadians took the top two spots with Frank Sorbara finishing first in 5:58:34 and Martin Caron second at 6:01:53.

Donovan Geldenhuys of South Africa was third in 6:03:06.

Age Group Women: 1st, Liza Rachetto, US, 6:32:21; 2nd, Jaime Simmons, US, 6:38:34; 3rd, Sophie Bubb, Great Britain, 6:40:30.

Open Wave: 1st, Nathan Veldhoen, Canada, 6:39:50; 2nd, Patricia Stathers, Canada (top female), 7:90:01.

Para-triathlete­s: Australia, 7:34:09.

The Aquabike championsh­ip was also held on Sunday, consisting of a 3 km swim and 120 km bike.

A total of 383 athletes (212 men and 171 women) competed in the Aquabike Age Group event. 1st, John Domandl,

In the men’s race, it was Stephen Sheldrake of New Zealand first in 3:45:27 and Jan Henningsen of Denmark was second at 3:47:37.

In the women’s race, the top two finishers were from Great Britain – Maria Powell first in 4:09:36 and Amy Pritchard second in 4:10:03.

The Open Wave Aquabike had 13 competitor­s, with Derrill Stepp of U.S. prevailing in 4:23:32.
