Group discusses near-death experiences

-

Editor: A few weeks ago a woman whose beloved dog had just died wrote in to ask if anyone knew if there was a dog heaven. Probably all of us pet lovers hope that they are still loved and cared for somewhere.

No matter how much we think we love another adult human being, there has to be some healthy boundaries to that love, but with a pet we can open our heart and feel that unconditional love 24/7.

I respect that persons poignant grief and her courage in asking the question so publicly.

There are now millions of people worldwide who report that they have had an neardeath experience, that is, during a period of unconsciousness, they experienced that there is an “other side” or “afterlife” for humans.

But only a few, except for children, mention the presence of animals. I referenced these child reports in P.M.H. Atwater’s book, The Big Book of Near Death Experience. There are four short mentions of children seeing deceased pets.

This may be because in a child’s shorter lifespan, the passing of a pet figures more prominently in their life. I also see that the nature of the pet soul is discussed with people who have been hypnotically regressed to a time before entering this life by the late psychologist Michael Newton.

His two books are in the Penticton library and contain an index at the back for easily finding a particular subject. I hope this gives some peace of mind and heart to the woman who wrote that letter.

Joe and Anastasia Hernandez and myself have a monthly discussion group for people who have had a near-death experience or a spiritually transformative experience and find it beneficial to share their story or ask questions.

We did have one very science-minded gentleman who shared his heart-warming story about a communication with a deceased pet.

You can find us at info@meetup.com under IANDS Okanagan The next meeting is Sept. 9 at 5:30 p.m. at the Oasis United Church in Penticton. We are non-denominational and operate by donation. Everyone is welcome. Patricia Kristie, Penticton
