Kelowna Curling Club turning 75 this season

Several events next week to celebrate anniversary

-

The Kelowna Curling Club will kick off its 75th anniversary season in style next weekend.

In April of 1942, a group of individuals grew tired of curling outdoors only and started a society to build a curling club in Kelowna. By 1951, that dream had come true and the first Kelowna Curling Club was built on the corner of Water and Doyle.

In 1968, Kelowna hosted the Brier, which remains the largest curling event ever held here. That was the first of many national and international events hosted by the Kelowna Curling Club.

In 1978, the club move to 12 sheets and to Recreation Avenue.

The Kelowna Curling Club is now the largest curling club in the world, with over 1,200 members and four world championship titles.

On Friday, Sept. 8, there will be a reception and live music presented by Steam Whistle beer and Andrew Peller wines.

On Saturday, Sept. 9, guest speaker Bryan Mudryk of TSN and the Hip Replacements are the headliners for a night of dinner and dancing presented by Jack Daniels.

Then, on Sunday, Sept. 10, a brunch will wind up the initial anniversary celebration.

Tickets for all three events can be purchased online at kelownacurling.com/ general_info/75th.

There will be a silent auction running throughout the weekend, with many curling celebrity autographed items up for grabs.
