Steam rebound to beat Sicamous

After losing for the first time in three games to open the season, the Summerland Steam bounced back with a convincing road victory.

It left the KIJHL’s Okanagan Division with a different look to it, with Princeton (3-0-1) and the Kelowna Chiefs (3-0-0) occupying the top two spots, Summerland at 3-1-0 and the idle Osoyoos Coyotes sitting at 1-1-0. SATURDAY — Steam 6 Sicamous 0: Cody Swan scored twice and Matthew Huber bounced back after a tough game a night earlier with a 26-save shutout as Summerland beat the Eagles in Sicamous. Sam Jobnes, Everett Scherger, Gavin Lawrie and Cole Williams also scored and Ryan Allen carded three assists for the Steam, who led 1-0 and 3-0 at the period breaks. Keenan Starkell made 45 saves for Sicamous. Chiefs 10 Kamloops 2: Brett Witala had a hat trick and two assists, Isaac Dutka scored twice and Brody Dale logged a goal and four helpers as Kelowna blitzed the Storm at the Rutland Arena.

Kelowna led 2-1 and 7-1 at the breaks and outshot the visitors 49-21.

FRIDAY — Revelstoke 4 Steam 2: Goals by Ullar Wiatzka, Clark Nelson, Cole Golden and Matt Cadden gave the surprising Grizzlies (4-00) the win at the Summerland Arena.

Lucas Jirousek scored twice in the first eight minutes of the third period to get the Steam within 4-2.

Huber started and was lifted in the second period after surrenderi­ng four goals on 13 shots. Brandon Peacock made his KIJHL debut and stopped all 19 shots he faced, while Revelstoke’s Giovanni Sambrielaz made 22 stops. Chiefs 4 Posse 3: In a battle of unbeaten teams, Dale’s third goal of the game 21 seconds into the second five-minute overtime period gave Kelowna the win in Princeton.

Dale, who had four goals and eight points in two weekend games, also tied the game with seven minutes to play as the Chiefs overcame 2-0 and 3-1 deficits.

UPCOMING: On Friday, Osoyoos plays its home opener against Kamloops at 7:35 p.m., Sicamous visits Summerland at 7:30 p.m., and North Okanagan goes to Kelowna at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, it’s Kamloops at Summerland at 7:30 p.m., while Osoyoos visits Sicamous and Kelowna travels to Chase.
