Osoyoos, Kelowna settle for splits, Summerland sweeps

After a disappoint­ing performanc­e in their home opener, the Osoyoos Coyotes bounced back with a convincing win on the road.

The Kamloops Storm waltzed into the Sun Bowl Arena and beat the Coyotes 6-2 on Friday for their first win of the season, before Osoyoos triumphed 5-0 over the lowly Sicamous Eagles on Saturday.

The Summerland Steam swept a pair of home games to move into first place in the Okanagan Division, while the Kelowna Chiefs split a pair of lopsided 7-0 games.

SATURDAY — Coyotes 5 Sicamous 0: Hunter Johnson scored twice and Daniel Paul made 24 saves for the shutout as Osoyoos beat winless Sicamous (0-4-0).

Nick Nordstrom, Kaleb Comishin and Austin Cleave also scored for Osoyoos, who scored three in the second to open up a scoreless game.

Zack Wickson stopped 39 shots for the Eagles.

Steam 5 Kamloops 2: Blake Holowaty scored twice for a second straight night and Summerland rode three straight secondperi­od goals to victory.

Wyatt Kelly, Riley Smoler and Cody Swan also scored for the Steam. Matt Huber had another routine night with 13 saves.

Curtis Magas and Yewta Plamandon scored for Kamloops (1-5-0). Jordan Wilde made 25 stops in a losing cause.

Chase 7 Chiefs 0: Kaden Black and Pat Brady scored twice and the Heat exploded for six power-play goals to beat visiting Kelowna.

Quinn Slezak, Ryan Okino and Evan Hughes also scored and Zach Fournier had four assists for the Heat (3-3-0), who notched five goals in the third period.

Connor Webb had 30 saves for the shutout and Ethan Hunt stopped 49 shots for the Chiefs.

FRIDAY — Kamloops 6 Coyotes 2: Erik Evans notched a goal and three assists and the Storm exploded for all six goals in the second-period to spoil the Coyotes’ homeopener.

Plamondon, Mitch Fargey and Lucas Gaudet also connected for the Storm, while Johnson and Comishin lit the lamp for the Coyotes in front of 383 fans.

Liam Aitken gave up four goals on 16 shots before Paul came on to stop 15 of 17 for the Coyotes. Wilde made 30 stops for Kamloops.

Steam 8 Sicamous 2: Everett Scherger and Lucas Jirousek produced hat tricks and Holowaty scored twice as Summerland stomped Sicamous.

Aaron Plessis and Seb Archambaul­t scored for the Eagles, who fell behind 4-0 and 7-1 at the intermissi­ons.

Huber stopped 13 shots, while the Steam directed 39 shots on two Sicamous goalies.

Chiefs 7 North Okanagan 0: Juanre Naude potted three goals and Jarin Sutton two as Kelowna routed the Knights in a penalty-filled affair at the Rutland Arena. Brett Witala and Cole Williams also scored for the Chiefs, who were up 4-0 and 6-0 at the period breaks.

Aris Anagnostop­oulos made 11 saves for the Chiefs before being ejected for fighting 14:30 into the second period. Hunt came on and was much busier with 29 saves to preserve the shutout. Kelowna had 33 shots on goal.

After three weekends of play in the Okanagan Division, the Steam are 5-1-0, Kelowna (4-1-0) and Princeton (3-1-1-1) are tied for second, followed by Osoyoos 2-2-0 and North Okanagan 0-2-1-1.

UPCOMING: Princeton Kelowna on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

On Friday, Osoyoos travels to Summerland in the first Battle of the South Okanagan of the season at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Summerland visits Kelowna at 7 p.m. and Revelstoke goes to Osoyoos at 7:35 p.m.

NOTES: All 20 teams have now lost at least once in regulation time, while Sicamous and North Okanagan are the only winless teams. . . .
