Grass fire doused outside of Cawston

- — Herald staff

We’re not out of the woods yet. Members of the BC Wildfire Service were called out Tuesday afternoon to douse a grass fire on a steep hillside about six kilometres east of Cawston.

No structures were threatened and the blaze was brought to heel after scorching 15 hectares. It was listed as 100 per cent contained and under control as of Wednesday afternoon.

“Our crews and aircraft were able to box it in with retardant and handguard,” said BC Wildfire Service spokeswoman Justine Hunse.

Nine firefighters remained at the scene Wednesday for mop-up duties and patrol.

Hunse said the fire is suspected to be human-caused and an investigation is underway.

The fire danger rating throughout much of the South Okanagan is still listed as high.

Time to apply for gaming grants

Non-profits interested in accessing community gaming grants from the B.C. government are invited to attend a special grantwriting workshop next month in Penticton.

An official from the Community Gaming Grants Branch will take participants through the eligibility and application process for money.

Community gaming grants represent the public’s cut of gambling proceeds.

The workshop is set for Oct. 25, 9-11 a.m., at the Shatford Centre.
