Osoyoos wins initial Battle of the South Okanagan over Summerland, 4-2

After falling to the Osoyoos Coyotes in the first battle of the South Okanagan of the season, the Summerland Steam bounced back for a big road win over the Kelowna Chiefs in KIJHL weekend action.

The Coyotes went the other way, dropping a home-ice decision to the surprising Revelstoke Grizzlies.

When the dust settled, the Steam remained on top in the congested Okanagan Division standings.

SATURDAY — Steam 5 Chiefs 2: Gavin Lawrie scored twice as Summerland beat Kelowna at the Rutland Arena.

Simon Snyman, Cody Swan and Blake Holowaty also scored for the Steam, who scored three times in the third period to open up a close 2-1 game. Riley Smoler had two assists and is now fourth in the league with 18 points.

Jordan Woytas and Kaden Stewart scored for Kelowna.

Matt Huber made 27 stops for the Steam and Ethan Hunt blocked 31 for the Chiefs.

Revelstoke 5 Coyotes 2: Two-goal efforts by Josh Irvine and Cody Flann sparked the Grizzlies to their league-high seventh win in eight games at the Sun Bowl Arena.

Jack MacNamara also scored.

Canucks 3, Oilers 2

VANCOUVER — Markus Granlund had a goal and an assist, and Jacob Markstrom made 25 saves Saturday as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Edmonton Oilers 3-2

Cameron Welch had both goals for the Coyotes, who led 1-0 after one period before the Grizzlies took control thanks to three unanswered goals in the second.

Giovanni Sambrielaz made 31 saves for the win, while Daniel Paul had 33 saves for Osoyoos. FRIDAY — Coyotes 4 Steam 2: Carter Robinson scored twice as Osoyoos got the victory at the Summerland Arena.

Jackson Barrett and Welch into an empty net with 37 seconds left also scored for the Coyotes, who led 1-0 and 3-2 at the period breaks.

Swan and Scott Robinson replied for Summerland.

Paul had 32 saves for the win and Brandon Peacock made 18 saves for the Steam.

The Steam lead the division with a 6-2-0 mark for 12 points, Princeton Posse are 4-21-1 for 10, Kelowna 4-3-0 for 8, Osoyoos 3-3-0 for 6 and North Okanagan 1-2-1-1 for 4.

UPCOMING: North Okanagan visits Osoyoos on Wednesday at 7:35 p.m. at the Sun Bowl.

On Friday, Osoyoos visits Kelowna at 7 p.m. and Chase travels to Summerland in a 7:30 p.m. puck-drop.

On Saturday, Summerland hosts Kamloops, and Osoyoos is home to Chase. in the pre-season finale for both clubs.

Jake Virtanen and Loui Eriksson had the other goals for Vancouver.

Leon Draisaitl scored twice for Edmonton, while Connor McDavid had two assists. Cam Talbot stopped 14 shots in the loss.

The Oilers open Wednesday at home to the Calgary Flames, while the Canucks don’t start until Saturday versus Edmonton.
