Thank you Canadian veterans

-

Remembrance Day is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who have fought for our nation. Through the First and Second World Wars, Korean and Vietnam conflicts, thousands of Canadian soldiers gave their lives in defence of freedom. Still more have fought in other UN and NATO missions around the globe.

And courageous Canadian men and women continue to put their lives on the line today, halfway around the world in the fight against terrorism.

Canada has long pulled more than its weight on the battlefield. We have answered the call whenever and wherever we are needed. And we have excelled, even in the face of outdated equipment and tiny budgets compared to the big military powers.

Today, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we pause to remember those who did not come back.

For their families, every day is Remembrance Day.

We pray that no others join their ranks in the military cemeteries even though we know that prayers are not enough to make that happen.

But today is not just about those who died. It is also about those who pushed fear and better judgment aside and marched bravely into the heart of darkness. They fought so we wouldn’t have to. We owe them all a debt of gratitude.

As you wear your poppy with pride today, remember them.

And, if you get the chance, thank a veteran for all they have done. Our freedom is the proof their comrades did not die in vain.
