Explanation necessary
Agricultural Land Reserve. What was he afraid of then? Lloyd Christopherson Summerland
Open letter to Summerland council:
As you are probably aware there is quite a note of astonishment around Summerland that this issue is coming back to Council for reconsideration on Nov. 14.
What residents appear to be surprised about is the mayor’s belief that a 6-1 vote against the proposal indicates that council was not well informed on the subject. This after: • RDOS worked on site selection for upwards of five years
• Summerland council having two seats at the RDOS board
• The expectation that those Summerland reps on the RDOS board would inform the other Summerland councillors of ongoing RDOS projects
• RDOS presentation Summerland council
• RDOS open houses, including Summerland, to explain their process and decisions
• RDOS website which contains an enormous amount of information on their process, background reports, etc.
• 2007 Summerland Transportation Master Plan
• 2012 Summerland Watershed Master Plan
• Council’s recent visit to a compost treatment site in the Lower Mainland
• Experiences of Merritt and the Nicola Valley with sewage and compost disposal
• Documented issues with composting and enforcement in the Lower Mainland
• 141 pieces of correspondence from the public, and from what I could see, only one writer in support of the proposal.
The above is a short list of background information available to the mayor, council and the public. If the mayor has additional information at his disposal it is unfortunate that it has not yet been made available.
Myself and many others believe to that council made the appropriate decision on Oct. 23, and for that I wish to thank you.
If the motion to reconsider comes to a vote without dying due to lack of a second or council does not vote down the proposal again, the public will be looking for very detailed and meaningful explanations from council.
