Green leader coming to town
It’s being touted as a byelection town hall, yet no byelection has been called.
B.C. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver and Kelowna West Green candidate Robert Stupka are hosting the session Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Westbank Community Centre.
Kelowna West has been without an MLA since former premier Christy Clark resigned in August.
Clark was reelected as the riding’s MLA in the May provincial election, but left all her political posts after her BC Liberal government was defeated in the Legislature.
The NDP with Green party support took over.
Premier John Horgan has yet to set a date for the byelection. However, political parties are making preparations.
The Liberals have picked former Kelowna West MLA and cabinet minister Ben Stewart to run for the seat.
Stewart gave up his seat in 2013 so Clark, who lost her Vancouver-area riding, could run in a byelection and continue as premier.
Stewart went on to be B.C.’s Asia trade commissioner for a time.
The NDP has picked Shelley Cook to run in the byelection. Cook finished second to Clark in the May election.
Besides the town hall meeting, Weaver will also be meeting with businesses and media on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in the Central Okanagan.
