Volcanoes bigger threat than people

-

Dear editor: Carbon tax is just another tax and what does the B.C government do with it?

Think of the money the BC government collects every year on fuel alone. The tax per litre is 0.667 cents, there are 3,615,373 cars registered in B.C., the average car uses 1,500 litres per year. All this money goes into general revenue.

A few years ago there was a volcanic eruption in Iceland. The first four days of spewing volcanic ash has negated every single effort we have made in the past five years to control CO2 emissions on earth.

Of course you know about this evil carbon dioxide we are trying to suppress… it’s that vital chemical compound that every plant requires to live and grow and to synthesize into oxygen for all humans and all animal life.

Editor’s note: From the U.S. Geological Survey (www.volcanoes.usgs.gov):

“There is no question that very large volcanic eruptions can inject significant amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens vented approximately 10 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere in only nine hours. However, it currently takes humanity only 2.5 hours to put out the same amount. While large explosive eruptions like this are rare and only occur globally every 10 years or so, humanity's emissions are ceaseless and increasing every year.”
