Humans aren’t most intelligent

-

Dear editor: Stupidity Incorporated? It has long been believed that the human animal is the most intelligent life form on this planet.

Recently there have been some detractors of this belief. This has been shown by somewhat asinine reactions by human beings to various situations in which they supposedly experience a high or are excited by a turn of events.

One only has to recall the malificent, mindless actions of a crowd in Vancouver that did an enormous amount of damage and raised havoc, broke windows, burned cars, smashed windows and looted stores as a result of the Canucks being knocked out of final hockey play.

On Sunday, Super Bowl LII was held in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. That in and of itself is not mind provoking. The two teams that were playing were the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles for the prized Super Bowl trophy.

This meant that there were fans from the local area; fan supporters from both teams from out of town.

The Patriots, with Tom Brady, were odds on favourites to win. However such was not the case. Philadelphia was victorious and the Patriot dynasty of wins had ended. What ensued was totally mindless and unwarranted.

Some fans be they local; out of town or otherwise, saw fit to show their exuberance of a victory or their discontent as a result of a loss by acting in a riotous way by vandalizing and overturning cars; having fights; falling from light posts and falling from building or store front projections.

What did all of these shenanigans accomplish, you might ask? The answer is a big, fat nothing! Zero, zilch, nada et al.

All it did was to prove the detractors right to some degree and disprove the thought that the human animal may not be the most intelligent form of life on the planet. It only goes to tell us that “there is no cure for stupid!”

The epilogue to all of this is that it will happen again, you can count on it. Experience will not prove to be a better teacher. Nothing will be learned from this and it will, undoubtedly, happen again and again.

When will people learn? In this case, the 12th of never! Ron Barillaro Penticton
