Habitat for Humanity ReStore opening in Penticton in March

- By DALE BOYD

Those looking to be thrifty, doing a bit of DIY and helping out a good cause are going to have a one-stop shop opening soon in Penticton.

A Habitat for Humanity ReStore is coming to the city, with a targeted opening date of March 3.

A full-scale renovation of the 16,000-square-foot space, formerly the home of the Rooms To Go furniture store at 2498 Skaha Lake Rd., is underway. The space will be built to receive donated and used furniture, home decor, appliances, building supplies and other home furnishings. The resale of the donated items goes toward building new homes for families.

The ReStore is looking to hire four to five staff, including a senior manager, and to make use of 10 to 12 volunteers.

A volunteer fair held at both Cherry Lane Shopping Centre and the new ReStore location drew a lot of interest, according to the CEO of Habitat for Humanity Okanagan, Sarah Nelems.

“It went really well. The exciting thing was people came to both (Cherry Lane) and our ReStore location,” Nelems said.

She said the new location also has a thrift store above it, Pipsqueaks and Damsel’s Consignment, which should work out well for bargain shoppers.

“That’s a bit of synergy,” Nelems said.

Habitat for Humanity Okanagan has been in the Valley for more than 20 years, built and sold 22 homes, and currently has 17 partner families and ReStore locations in Kelowna and West Kelowna.

“We’re thrilled to be coming to Penticton and hope to start building in the South Okanagan in the future,” Nelems said.
