6 lanes won’t fit on Pattullo exit

-

Dear editor: I may not be as swift of mind as some people, but at my age I don't believe those who believe they are the answer to everything are so swift either.

Take the building of a new Pattullo bridge, for instance. It brings back a fond memory of two early teenagers crossing the 25-cent toll bridge in a borrowed car during the early 1950s.

Of course the car never stopped till it was pulled over by the RCMP just as it cleared Peterson Hill into Whalley and consequently we were put in a sub jail at the south end of the bridge.

Being a ward of the B.C. Children's AID Society, we decided to take a holiday from the home for displaced boys who left the premises to hopefully become cowboys far away.

Anyway, years later I crossed Pattullo Bridge more times than I can remember while hauling lumber south to north.

It was a tight squeeze back then and I certainly agree the bridge has served well and needs to be retired. However my question is with the new Liberal squawk, who is complaining the new bridge should have six lanes not four?

I would like to ask the Liberal scholar, where would six, let alone four lanes, emerge with the increased traffic flow?

By the way, I wrote a letter many years ago suggesting laying the roadbed for future rapid transit as far as Hope when the heavy equipment was building Highway 1.

Now some Rip Van Winkles are reviving my idea that appeared in the AbbotsfordMatsqui newspaper many years ago. I have the copy. Tom Isherwood Olalla
