Respect feds’ decision
Dear editor: Faith in Canadians governing rationally is severally challenged.
There is a serious dispute between the recently elected British Columbia government and the Alberta government concerning adding an oil pipelines through B.C. and increasing B.C. coastal oil tanker shipping.
In addition to thwarting traditional interprovincial practice, the Constitutional Authority and supremacy of the federal government’s approval is being defied by the B.C. government. The approval process was all encompassing, including potential oil spills.
Disgracefully this all came about because some political candidates encouraged blocking additional oil pipeline. Even though, they were fully aware the jurisdiction rested with the elected MPs, the federal government and Senate.
The credibility of Canada’s staid adherence to law and order; the fundamental faith of all commerce and moral societal respect has taken a severe set-back.
1. I ask B.C. voters to firstly respect the Canadian constitutional authority and secondly endorse the federal government’s oil pipeline approval.
2. Because the federal government’s oil pipeline approval was rejected by many B.C. voters, I ask federal government to setup a non-political body to periodically keep the general public fully informed in that voters will have the facts to judge and govern themselves thereby.
3. Since a B.C. growing population and a growing economy requires ever greater amounts of gasoline and since BC imports 70 per cent of liquid gasoline, that another refinery is built far away from towns and build a pipeline to carry the gasoline to B.C. consumers. Bruce Alton McGillis Penticton
