South Okanagan’s hard work finally appearing on screen

A movie that arguably provided the most production excitement in the South Okanagan will hit Oliver’s big screen next month.

The Humanity Bureau, starring Nicolas Cage, is scheduled for a week of showings at the Oliver Theatre, April 7 to 13.

The Canadian-made film is directed by Rob. W. King (Corner Gas, Moccasin Flats).

The movie, shot at South Okanagan locations in late 2016 and early 2017 — including on Osoyoos Indian Band lands and in the town of Osoyoos — is described as a dystopian thriller set in the year 2030.

The movie’s premise has the world in a permanent state of economic recession and facing environmental disaster as a result of global warming. That encourages the federal government, through an agency called the Humanity Bureau, to exile members of society deemed unproductive.

Cage plays a bureau caseworker who determines to save the lives of a mother and child banished through the agency.

The movie also features several prominent South Okanagan actors, including Destee Klyne, who was raised in Osoyoos, and her son, Jett.

Jett has a role in Skyscraper, described as a hostage-action thriller set in China starring Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson and Neve Campbell.

Cage’s arrival caused a stir in Osoyoos. He was spotted — and photographed — in a grocery store and paused to chat with staff.

The movie is reported to be part of a sixpack of science fiction, horror and action films produced in a partnership involving Regina-based Mind’s Eye Entertainment and U.S.-based Bridgegate Pictures that will bring more crews to the South Okanagan.
