UNISUS announces bursary program
Financial help available for local families at international school
SUMMERLAND — A new private school in Summerland has announced a bursary program to help make a world-class education available to Okanagan students.
UNISUS International School is welcoming its first students with a special one-time bursary program for kids from junior kindergarten to Grade 6 for the 2018-19 academic year.
“A group of visionary leaders approached us to make available the unique, world-class education offered at UNISUS to Okanagan students,” said operations director Cindy Leung said.
“We are excited to invite families to join us in creating a global community of young leaders to meet the challenges of tomorrow.”
Families are welcome to visit the school on April 14 and May 5, and are asked to register in advance at www.unisus.ca.
The school’s trans-disciplinary, forward-oriented curriculum focuses on STEAM—Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics—and inquiry-based learning.
“Science tells students how things work, technology gives them the tools to do tasks and engineering the skills to solve problems,” Leung explained.
The arts provide an opportunity for personal expression and mathematics the ability to communicate through numbers.
“We need to nurture the creativity of children as young as three years old and STEAM is an excellent way to do that,” Leung said.
UNISUS also embraces the concept of creating hands-on ways that encourage students to design, experiment, build and invent as they engage in the STEAM approach to learning.
And the critical thinking and problem-solving skills students will learn at UNISUS will help to prepare them for meeting the challenges of tomorrow and to assume leadership roles.
“More than 65 per cent of students will work in jobs that don’t even exist today,” Leung noted.
Sports, another pillar of a UNISUS education, is supported by the school’s extensive field and gymnasium facilities.
Starting in the academic year 2019-2020, UNISUS will accept international and local students from junior kindergarten through Grade 11.
“The presence of international students will give all students the opportunity to immerse themselves in different cultures and develop a truly global perspective,” Leung said.
Construction of a dormitory to welcome around 100 students to the weekly and full boarding program will begin soon.
UNISUS aspires to become an International Baccalaureate school and this year will be seeking candidacy status for the primary years program.
Bursary applications may be made for up to seven years – ending once the child reaches Grade 6.
Disclosure of financial details is not required for the first year. Financial information, however, is necessary to quality for support in the second and subsequent years. Other bursary programs will be available after the 2018-2019 school year.
Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until all funds have been allocated.
