Golf tourney to fund scholarships

Fund to disburse $21,500 in awards to 27 students

Need proof that supporting the South Okanagan Secondary School Enrichment Fund Society does real good? Look no further than Spencer Hunt.

The native of Okanagan Falls collected the $2,500 Francis Family Scholarship through the society when he graduated from SOSS in 2008, and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at UBC-O in Kelowna and later a master’s degree in the same subject from McMaster University in Hamilton.

Hunt now works as a business and costing analyst for CIBC in Toronto.

“This emerging field is kind of like putting computer science, mathematics and statistics into a blender and drinking whatever juice comes out,” he said.

“It’s exploratory, novel and ever changing. I’m confident that I have the skills and experience to continue on this path, and I want to thank the SOSS Enrichment Fund Society for helping me acquire these skills.”

This year, the society has committed to disbursing $21,500 in awards to 27 graduating SOSS students, who will join the approximately 425 who have received help over the past 23 years since the fund’s inception.

To keep it going long into the future, the society is hosting its annual golf tournament this weekend at Fairview Mountain in Oliver.

The cost to enter is $75 for members and $130 for members, which includes 18 holes of golf both Saturday and Sunday, along with meals and entry into prize draws.

Volunteers have been busy of late getting the course ready, after it was shut down by a mudslide last month.
