Vernon crime taken to task

Business owners in Vernon are concerned about a rise in street-level crime, everything from drug use, prostitution and public defecation to theft, aggressive behaviour and arson.

About 160 business owners and others attended the Vernon Activate Safety Task Force town hall at the Schubert Centre earlier this week.

Submissions from the town hall will be compiled by the task force to be presented, with recommendations, to city council on July 9.

Vernon city council established the task force to address concerns brought forward by businesses.

The task force is made up by members of the chamber of commerce, city of Vernon, Downtown Vernon Association, Vernon Tourism, RCMP, city council and the general public.

BX Creek Trail closed

With creek levels on the rise, BX Creek Trail and BC Creek Falls Trail have been closed as a precaution. The creek trail is outside Vernon behind the BX Dog Park and the falls trail is at Tillicum and Silver Star roads.

Signs have been posted to point out the closed sections.

“We really just want to make sure everyone is aware of what is happening to ensure the safety of the residents and their pets,’’ said North Okanagan Regional District parks manager Keith Pinoski.
