A Montreal school district lacks judgment

-

And the winner of the Worst School Board of the Month is ....

Congratulations to the school board in Montreal that sent a student home for wearing a hockey jersey to school, Thursday, in recognition of the Humboldt bus crash.

“If the student had chosen to wear a Broncos sweater, we would have understood his gesture was noble,” a public relations thingee for the school district told The Canadian Press.

OK. This is Montreal. Can a high school student walk into a Sport Chek and buy a Humboldt Broncos jersey? Probably not, but I’m sure they’ll have lots of Habs jerseys.

The Canadian Forces relaxed its dress code for one day, why can’t a school in Montreal?

John Fogerty is returning to the South Okanagan Events Centre this summer.

When Fogerty last played there in 2013, it was epic — nearly two-and-ahalf hours of music and a set list which included his solo material and the hits he wrote for CCR.

That tour, called “1969” (although reviewer Kyle Anderson pointed out that most of the songs performed were post 1969), began with a 15minute video on the cultural significance of that year (Woodstock, Vietnam, the moon landing, the Beatles rooftop concert).

Put me in coach, I’m ready to play.

My apologies to Jim Dunlop of Penticton. He was named in an article of people “rumoured to be interested or who are being enticed to seek the nomination by party members” for the South Okanagan West Kootenay Conservative nomination. Dunlop is definitely not seeking the nomination.

Thanks to the students and faculty of Okanagan College in Kelowna for wonderful hospitality. I spent several hours there on Wednesday touring the facility. They have some truly amazing programs. It’s not like when I was in college.

Coming soon to the pages of your Kelowna Daily Courier and Penticton Herald.

April 20 will mark the six-month countdown to the next municipal election. Elections will be held across B.C. on October 20.

As a public service, both papers will review the past three-and-a-half years and publish the voting record of both councils — as well as the school boards and regional districts — on what were contentious issues in the community. Why did the City of Penticton ever let Ironman get away? Moyra Baxter is the Cal Ripken Jr. of school board trustees. Until last month, when she left a meeting early due to a sudden illness, she had never missed a meeting in 21 years. Prince was gone far too soon.

Good luck and best wishes to Christine Petkau who is stepping down as executive director of the Summerland Chamber of Commerce. I always enjoyed dealing with Christine and she was excellent at what she did. She will be missed.
