Wenatchee wins Fred Page Cup

Zak Galambos scored a pair of power play goals and the Wenatchee Wild held the visiting Prince George Spruce Kings to eight shots on goal as the Wild claimed their first-ever Fred Page Cup B.C. Hockey League title with a 3-0 win in Game 5.

The Wild, in their third season in the league, became the first U.S.based team to win the BCHL title since Bellingham Braves in 1979.

Galambos opened the scoring under three minutes into the game and added his second of the game 6:19 into the third, while Wenatchee goalie Austin Park only had to make eight saves to earn his second shutout of the playoffs.

AJ Vanderbeck adding the one more into the empty net to seal the 3-0 win.

Wild forward Jasper Weatherby added two assists and finished the playoffs with a league-high 38 points in 20 games.

Spruce Kings goalie Evan DeBrouwer kept the game close, stopping 34 of 36 shots. Wenatchee will now face the Alberta Junior Hockey League champion Spruce Grove Saints in the Doyle Cup starting April 27.

Spruce Grove rallied to defeat the Okotoks Oilers 3-2 on Friday night to clinch the AJHL title, winning the final series 4-2.

The winner of the Doyle Cup moves on to the RBC Cup National Junior A Championsh­ip, starting May 15 in Chilliwack. The host Chilliwack Chiefs lost to Prince George in the opening round of the BCHL playoffs.
