Hotel is hardly ‘real farming’

Dear editor: Re: City lends support to hotel at winery, Herald, A3, May 10

I was so pleased to read that Coun. Konanz sees an opportunity in the proposed Holler Hotel on Lower Bench Road to show the one per cent what “real farming” is.

This is such a generous and useful impulse on her part and goes a long way to ensuring a viable farming future for our community. Way to go, Coun. Konanz!

Mr. Holler points to his project as a means to providing work to young people who would otherwise have to leave the Valley. I will be sure to relay this employment tip to my daughter who is pursuing studies in agriculture at UBC, although I don’t think a job as a housekeeper in a hotel is really what she had in mind when undertaking a university degree in “real farming.” Bernice Greig Penticton team trashing art, it would go a long way to bringing us together to solve problems.

If those darn artists would just stick to duck decoys everyone would have more time to work on the wicked lack of understanding the underpaid, overworked weekend staff have about the culture of mystery in our lives today.

I do hope someone has signed them up to actually contact the artists and have a conversation with them, they might just find hardworking, intelligent, community-service people who went out of their way to provide the public with an opportunity to discuss the real big issues of the day.

It is known that artists are the ones who find new ways of looking at things afresh.

But, hey wait, maybe the weekend staff actually were bright enough to dream up the idea of creating some controversy about public art because that would get people talking about their opinions and someone might come up and explain why they are here, where they are going and how they will know when they have arrived .

Probably not though. Pat Field Sculptor of The Portal (on the list) about this building frenzy, I think it will attract the homeless and destitute from near and far, like flies to jam.
