B.C. products take Peach City titles

Tyler Sparrow of Burnaby and Dan Durette of Kamloops were the overall winners at the 20th annual Peach City Half Marathon and 10K Sunday in Penticton.

Sparrow won the half marathon (21.1 km) in a time of 1 hour, 25 minutes and 46 seconds.

Durette took the 10K event in 41 minutes and 25 seconds.

A total of 178 participan­ts — 102 in the half marathon and 76 in the 10K — finished the two races, staged in the south end of the city.

HALF MARATHON: Michael Owen of Summerland was the top local finisher, coming second to Sparrow in a time of 1:27:55, while Roger Plamondon of Chemainus, B.C. rounded out the top three in 1:28:38.

Female athletes took five of the top 12 placings in the half marathon, led by Seija Deleenheer of Vernon, who came an impressive fourth overall in 1:34:07.

Katie Bowyer of Vancouver came second (sixth overall) in 1:35:44, while Amanda Kontkanen of Penticton was third in women’s and seventh overall in 1:37:42.

Jessica Ter Wolbeek of Kaleden finished 11th overall in 1:39:41.

Local athletes to win their age groups included:

Spencer Frost (Penticton), 1st in men’s 50-54 and 14th overall in 1:44:56.

Kylie Erb (Summerland), 1st in women’s 20-24 and 17th overall in 1:45:59.

Brent Richards (Penticton), 1st in men’s 65-69 and 68th overall in 2:10:36.

Ronald Ness (Penticton), 1st in men’s 80-99 and 97th overall in 2:43:24.

10K RUN: Cornel Barnard of Chase came in just 46 seconds behind Durette in 42:11 and Dale Huzar of Prince George wasn’t far behind at 42:30.

Michael Kascak of Penticton was the top local finisher, coming 7th overall in 43:33, and Dave Ribar of Penticton was 10th overall in 45:28.

On the women’s side, Julia Kirchhoff of Berlin, Germany, finished first, coming sixth overall in 43:04, Siobhan McManus of Kelowna was second place and ninth overall in 45:18.

Melissa Albert of Summerland was the top local female, coming 21st overall in 53:25.

Local athletes to win their age groups included:

Hunter Robbins (Penticton), 1st in men’s 19-and-under, 28th overall, 59:22.

Laurie Kidd (Naramata), 1st in men’s 60-69, 33rd overall, 1:00:37.

Margaret Karow (Penticton), 1st in women’s 65-69, 37th overall, 1:02:12.
