Man shot during home invasion

Well known rental home has long been source of concern for neighbours, witness says

An apparent home invasion Tuesday night in Penticton left a 30-year-old man with a nonfatal gunshot wound to his leg, according to police and a witness.

The witness, who lives near the scene and spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals, said he heard a commotion in the yard of 1060 Government St. around 11 p.m. and looked over to see a man breaking security lights with a hammer.

The witness then heard what sounded like two gunshots.

After calling 911, the witness went over to the home when police arrived and saw a bald, heavyset Caucasian male bleeding heavily from one of his legs, and heard the victim later tell paramedics he had been shot.

“That was premeditated knocking those security lights out to keep everything in darkness before all the shit hit the fan,” the witness suggested.

Approximately six people were arrested outside of the rental home, which has long been a source of concern for neighbours, the witness added.

Police confirmed in a press release the “well known” home is a “problem property,” and that the shooting remains under investigation.

“There is no indication the public is at risk, and investigators are actively working to determine what occurred,” RCMP Const. James Grandy said in the release, which provided few additional details, other than the victim’s age and that the shots were fired inside the residence.

Grandy said in a follow-up email police hadn’t yet identified a suspect.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Penticton RCMP at 250-492-4300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
