Summerland ready to roll on skate park

- By SUSAN MCIVER

Summerland— A public hearing on the application to rezone property at 8320 Prairie Valley Rd. to allow for a two-lot subdivision is at the top of the agenda for this evening’s meeting of Summerland council.

Following the public hearing, students from the “Plastaction” Lobby Group at Summerland Secondary School will ask council to consider banning plastic bags.

The students will provide research in support of their initiative and suggest alternatives to plastic bags.

The Summerland RCMP detachment report for January through March 2018 to be received for information states that violent crime in Summerland was up 14 per cent compared to the first quarter of 2017, property crime was down seven per cent and domestic violence remained the same.

Council will consider a resolution to urge the provincial government to place a moratorium on further use of Agricultural Land Reserve lands to grow cannabis until a sixmonth review and broad consultation is conducted.

Staff recommend the approval of a development variance permit application to allow for a dwelling for farm help to be located outside of the “farm home plate” and to be 10 square metres larger than permitted in the bylaws for property located at 11316 Sanborn St.

Staff also recommend that remaining unallocated grant in aid funds of $2,390 in the 20182020 financial plan be awarded to Hope Road Community Choir, 55-plusGold Medal Winners Curling Team and the Ride Don’t Hide Program.

The staff recommendation to issue license of occupation agreements for three food truck operations in the parking lot of Powell Beach, Rotary Beach and Peach Orchard Beach will come before council. If approved, staff will be authorized to negotiate a seasonal fee at market value for the terms of June 1 to September 30, 2018.

The proposed Summerland Skatepark will have a home if council approves a 30-year lease on School District No. 67 land located at the northeast corner of Summerland Secondary School property.

Director of finance David Svetlichny will present the 2017 statement of financial information.

The statement includes the schedules of remuneration and expenses for council and staff and of payments for services and goods.

Changes to the zoning bylaws that would modify development regulations related to secondary suites and carriage houses and that would increase the number of zoning districts in which they would be allowed will be considered for first and second reading.

Council will also consider giving first, second and third readings to an election and assent voting bylaw.

The bylaw would ensure the 2018 local election is held in accordance with the requirements of provincial legislation and is consistent with the successful administration of previous local elections.

The public is welcome to attend the meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. in Municipal Hall.
