RCMP confirm 2 died in Vernon house fire

It has now been confirmed two residents unaccounte­d for after a house fire near Vernon May 21 did die in the blaze.

Vernon RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service haven't identified the dead.

Besides saying the investigat­ion is ongoing, the police and coroner are releasing no other details at this time.

It was on May 21 about 4:15 a.m. when the police and North Westside Fire Rescue were called to a home in the 300 block of Northern-view Drive.

When they arrived, the home was fully engulfed in flames and ended up being completely destroyed.

At the time, it wasn't known if the two occupants were home or not.

Police have been on the scene since investigat­ing.

On Friday, the RCMP announced scene examinatio­n was complete and two people were killed in the fire.

“The investigat­ion into the cause of the fire is still ongoing at this time," said Const. Kelly Brett.

"The Vernon North Okanagan GIS (general investigat­ions section) unit will continue to work alongside the B.C. Coroner's Service on identifyin­g the two deceased individual­s."
