Another minority?

- —James Miller Valley Editor

Concessions usually happen before the Academy Awards (“I know, I’m not going to win”), but never five days before an election. Such was the case with Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne who said Saturday on the campaign trail: “Yeah, it looks like I’m not going to be the premier. It looks like we’re not going to have a Liberal government.”

Talk about putting a large KICK ME sign on your back. It was the “Garbo talks” of Canadian politics.

If I were a Liberal candidate in Ontario, I’d be pretty peeved right now.

Is Wynne sending a message to vote strategically and park your vote with the NDP, who, according to the polls have a slight edge on Doug Ford and the Progressive Conservatives?

She offered an explanation by stating, “You better believe having more Liberals at Queen’s Park to fend off whatever extreme policies a Doug Ford or an NDP government would bring forward, that’s important.”

Any hopes of a “Dewey defeats Truman” is a mere pipe dream right now for the Liberals, who have been in power since 2003. They might not maintain official party status, which is eight seats.

Wynne defied pollsters in 2014 by not only winning, but earning a majority government. Lightning won’t strike twice. British Columbia has always been considered the birthplace of whacky politics in Canada. Ontario has taken over the throne.

In Ontario, the PCs had a midnight-hour leadership contest to replace Patrick Brown — and they chose Doug Ford. That is whacky.

But, at this time on Friday morning Ford could be the premier-elect. Wynne could be out of a job altogether — she’s not even projected to win her own riding.

Three could also be a charm for NDP leader Andrea Horwath, who didn’t win in 2011 or 2014, but still maintained her party’s trust. So where will that leave Ontario? Most likely in the same situation B.C. is right now — with a minority government — and we all see how well that’s going over.

Ontario could end up in a similar mess as B.C.
