Public’s opportunity to visit Unisus International School
SUMMERLAND — Unisus International School, 7808 Pierre Drive in Summerland, is holding an open house on Sunday, June 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The public is invited to learn more about this new private school in a fun-packed, informative day.
Fun includes cotton candy, a bouncy castle and face painting plus soccer and basketball.
The 17-acre campus has extensive playing fields and a large, well-equipped gymnasium.
A highlight of the day will the opening of the Innovation Laboratory with its 12-makerspace work stations.
In the new lab, families will have the opportunity to try coding in Minecraft, making music on Raspberry Pi, creating a virtual reality scene and building video games.
Anyone wishing to participate in the workshops is asked to register in advance at www.unisus.ca.
Parents and students can learn about the school’s trans-disciplinary curriculum which focuses on STEAM—Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics—and inquiry -based learning.
“We were initially drawn to the school for its innovative approach and out-of-the-box thinking. It promises to have an excellent robotics (engineering and IT) program and a science and arts focus among other areas,” said, Heena Nagar, mother of six-year-old Ishan who will be starting Grade 1 in September.
Primary teachers Breanne Nicole and Andrea Walker will be on hand to meet families.
Spanish teacher Maria Magdelena Rathjen will also be present.
Spanish and Mandarin classes start in kindergarten.
Junior kindergarten students will have an exposure to and gain an appreciation of the two languages through the visual arts, music and reading.
UNISUS follows the International Baccalaureate curriculum and is seeking candidacy status.
The IB continuum of education for 3 to 19year-old students is unique because of its academic and personal rigour.
In the primary years the focus is on the development of the whole child, both in the classroom and in the outside world.
Open house visitors will notice the construction site of a 100-bed dormitory which will welcome students from across Canada and around the world in the 2019-2020 academic year.
Upon completion of the dormitory, UNISUS will be the only international school in Western Canada offering junior kindergarten to Grade 12 programs and weekly and fulltime boarding.
Limited spaces are still available in the 2018-2019 academic year for students from junior kindergarten to Grade 6.
School tours and information sessions can be arranged.
