Downtown Security
The City’s Chief Administrative Officer, Peter Weeber, provided Council with an update on the steps being taken to address inappropriate behaviours, crime, drug use and homelessness in Penticton downtown. The presentation included a summary of actions recently taken to address these challenges, including the formation of the City Working Group, increased patrols, improved street lighting, new signage and environmental design changes to known problem spots.
Economic Impact Assessment – 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts
The 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts was held in Penticton January 27 - February 4, 2018 at the South Okanagan Events Centre. The combined spending of out-of-town participants, delegates, spectators, and other people who visited Penticton totaled $5.6 million of economic activity locally. The average spending was approximately $1,400 per party.
Skaha Bluffs Area Boundary Extension Completion
Council received confirmation that the Skaha Bluffs Area boundary extension process has concluded successfully and that the Letters Patent for the City of Penticton have been amended accordingly to include Lot 1 Plan KAP 74449 Similkameen Division Yale District within the city boundary. The landowners are keen to proceed with development of the lands. Staff intend to return later this summer with a draft structure plan, servicing, OCP designations and zoning amendments for Council’s consideration. Confirmation of the partnership with BC Parks for the southern portion of these lands will be provided at that time. Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 2018-49, Development Permit and Development Variance Permit for 201, 205, 225 and 247 Vancouver Avenue, 236 Marina Way A public hearing was held for Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 2018-49, a bylaw that will rezone 201, 203, 225, 247 Vancouver Avenue and 236 Marina Way to C9 (Marina Way Commercial). The applicant is proposing to subdivide the properties to create a lot fronting Marina Way with the intent of constructing a seven storey, thirteen unit apartment building. Council gave second and third reading to the bylaw and requested the applicant continue communicating with the neighbourhood and revise the development permit drawings to show a stronger conformance with the Development Permit Area Guidelines.
