Dixon cards 60 in practice round

It will be take some doing for Kim Dixon — or anyone else for that matter — to improve on what he did in the practice round at the Jackson Triggs Penticton Open golf tournament.

The former longtime Penticton resident birdied the last six holes on Wednesday to set a new course record of 60, breaking the record of 61 set Sept. 3, 2010 by Penticton’s Doug Bancesco.

Dixon, a terrific golfer for so many years at the Penticton club, now makes his home in Vancouver.

“He still loves coming up here and playing the course,” said PG & CC head professional Guy Dow. “It’s quite an achievement and quite a finish on the back-9 to get the record.”

The Penticton course is a par-70 — 35 in and 35 out across a 6,101-yard layout from the gold tees.

It was fitting that Dixon shot a 60 as this is the 60th anniversary of the Penticton Open.

Dixon had a solid opening round on Thursday and was among the clubhouse leaders at two-under-par 68.

Two-time defending champion Matt Hopkins of Penticton was still out on the course. Hopkins holds the course record in tournament play of 63 set in the 2016 Penticton Open.

Dow said there is a full field of 166 golfers competing in the 54-hole event.

The final two rounds get going at 7 a.m. today and Saturday.
