Toy run set for next weekend

- By Okanagan Weekend Staff

Motorcycle enthusiasts from across the Okanagan are invited to participate in the third annual Kris Klassen Toy Run and Poker Derby on Saturday, July 28.

The event is for motorbike riders, trikes, Can-Ams and passengers.

The 300-kilometre ride will begin at 10 a.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion in Penticton, with stops at legions in Keremeos, Princeton, Peachland and Summerland. There will be prizes for the best poker hand along with several age-group awards.

Anyone who donates a toy or cash to the OSNS Child and Youth Development Centre may join the ride, which last year attracted about 100 participants.

Donations of new and gently used toys, clothing, books and small household items will be accepted during next week at all of the participating legion branches.

The event begins with a breakfast at the legion, starting at 8:30 a.m. Dinner will be available at 6 p.m. along with live entertainment.

Several legion members founded this event in 2016.

It previously was known as Christmas in July, but now is named in memory of Klassen, who died during last year’s event when he suffered a fatal heart attack while riding not far from Okanagan Falls.

To register, contact the legion in Penticton at 502 Martin St. or phone 250492-3074.
