Writer regrets submitting letter

-

Dear Editor: Re: “Shooting sports are fun,” by Jan Conradi, Okanagan Weekend, July 21.

I wish to say how sorry I am for not getting the correct information in responding to the gun issue for my letter to the editor dated July 19, 2018.

My husband was not available to give me the correct status on weapons and I should not have written the letter on the subject.

The letter in the Okanagan Weekend has rightly corrected me and I thank him for doing so. I did not ever wish to hurt gun owners’ feelings in any way. I do know that they are very respectful at the gun club in how they teach persons to use weapons in a responsible manner. I do sincerely regret my letter.

I will from now on make sure of all facts before writing another letter. Rosemary Thomas

Where Canada had a brigade, we should have had a division. Where we had a fighter division, we should have had a group. Where we had a small naval flotilla, we should had a fleet.

At the end of WWII, Canada had the third-largest air force and the fourthlargest navy. Canada could — and should — have done so much more that we did.

Canada’s NORAD contribution is an embarrassment: We have three RCAF fighter air bases. None of our navy frigates are equipped to serve in Arctic waters during the winter.

Our four submarines are British castoffs: The navy does not have resupply ships. When our ships sail, they must be resupplied by other NATO oilers.

In his part of the Arctic Ocean, Russia’s Putin has 40 ice breakers — seven or eight are nuclear powered.

Only God knows how many submarines he has in the Arctic. He has 140,000 sailors. He has several Arctic brigades; they train for summer and winter operations.

Canada has a few hundred Arctic Inuit Rangers that run around the Arctic ice cap on skidoos, they are armed with .303 LeEnfield single shot rifles.

I am quite happy to see Trump doing his fanny kicking in Europe.

What does Canada do with the money it should be spending to buy military equipment?

It is given to Quebec and Atlantic Canada as equalization and transfer payments. Ernie Slump
