Vees open pre-season in West Kelowna
Prospective rookies set to face-off tonight
The Penticton Vees made a minor trade as they get for their pre-season opener tonight in West Kelowna.
The Vees dealt the Canadian Junior Hockey League playing rights of forward Matt Gosiewski to Interior Division rivals, the Wenatchee Wild, for future considerations.
Gosiewski, a 20-year-old from Wilton, Conn., last played for Penticton in 2016-17, tallying four goals and 12 points in 36 regular-season games and adding a goal
TSN documentary to show former Knight
Former Penticton Knights forward Joe Murphy is the subject of a shocking documentary which premiers tonight on TSN Sportscentre.
Murphy, a first overall pick in the 1986 entry draft, who went on to win one Stanley Cup as a member of the Edmonton Oilers, is now homeless, alone and living on the streets of Kenora, Ont. The documentary shows his rise to the top — he earned as much as $15 million during his playing career — to hitting rock bottom.
Murphy played one season in Penticton in 1984-85. He had 68 goals and 84 assists and four points in 14 playoff contests as the Vees won the B.C. Hockey League championship.
The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Gosiewski played last season for Central Illinois and Des Moines of the U.S. Hockey League, garnering seven goals and 13 points in 48 games.
He had joined the Vees partway through 2016-17 from the USHL’s Cedar Rapids Rough Riders.
The Vees, meanwhile, will play an all-rookie game against the West Kelowna Warriors tonight at 7 p.m. at Royal LePage Place.
Vees GM/head coach Fred Harbinson said several members of the Anaheim Jr. Ducks midget team — that are taking part in the early stages of Vees’ training camp for a second straight season — will get to for a 152-point season, which also included 97 penalty minutes.
The Panthers (now the Vees) were 47-5 in the regular season. They won the BCHL title and eventually lost in the gold medal game of the Centennial Cup, the Dominion championship, 4-2 to the host team from Orillia, Ont.
Murphy left Penticton for a scholarship to Michigan State University before joining the Detroit Red Wings partway through the 1986-87 season.
GOLF
Janis Goll registered a 57 to top the first flight at the Summerland Golf and Country Club ladies’ “criss-cross” outing on Tuesday.
Nine holes were counted, double and the handicap subtracted to give the net suit up in the game, along with other Penticton freshmen.
The Ducks — coached by former BCHL forward August Aiken — have taken part in camp activities since it started on Monday, and will be returning to California on Thursday.
Vees camp continues on Thursday with practices at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
On Friday, the remaining players in camp will be divided ginto two groups for the annual Peaches Cup Blue-White intrasquad game at 5 p.m. at the South Okanagan Events Centre. Admission to the game is free.
The Vees will play three more pre-season games — next Wednesday against the Warriors at 7 p.m. at the SOEC, and a home-and-home with Wenatchee Aug. 31 on the road and Sept. 1, 6 p.m. at SOEC. score for the game.
Diana Leitch was second at 59 and Helen Pybus and Linda Brussee tied for third at 61.
In the second flight, Betsy McAndrew prevailed with a 57 and Maribel Rothfield and Barb Oleschuk tied for second at 60.
Als’ Manziel still not back at practice yet
MONTREAL — With Johnny Manziel in concussion protocol, Antonio Pipkin looks likely to get a second start at quarterback for the Montreal Alouettes.
Manziel was missing from practice again on Tuesday, but coach Mike Sherman said he should be back on the field today, although it is doubtful he will play when the Toronto Argonauts visit on Friday.
