GRANDPARENTS DAY

Hoping to inspire a new tradition while paying proper tribute to grandparents, the Penticton Lakeside Resort is hosting a special tea this Sunday.

“I got the idea from high tea at the Empress (Hotel) in Victoria,” said general manager David Prystay.

“There were lots of older people there with their grandchildren, and I really wanted to start a tradition here for grandparents and grandchildren to show their love and affection,” he said.

And while inspiration stemmed from his past experience at the Empress, Prystay says the date he chose wasn’t coincidental.

“It’s International Grandparents Day on Sunday,” explained Prystay. “I believe that grandparents should get the same amount of recognition, and the day should as well, just like Mother’s and Father’s Day do.”

It’s a day held dear to Prystay, a grandfather three times over, who has fond memories of his own elders.

“I remember when I got my driver’s license. I was living in North Vancouver. I used to drive all the way on the old highway to Vernon just to see my grandmother — that’s how close we were,” Prystay said.

“She’d fry up some chicken and my buddies were always welcome. We’d camp out at grandma’s house.”

And while his three grandchildren will be spending the day busy with their grandma, Prystay will be at the Lakeside in the kitchen, helping to make the day extra special for families.

Seatings will be available at 2, 2:30 and 3 p.m. Parents are welcome to join.

The cost is $25 for ages 13 and over, $12 for kids ages four to 12 and children three and under are free.

The event includes a selection of loose leaf teas, finger sandwiches and baked treats.
