Underdogs become champions

The Penticton Skaha Underdogs paddled to first place in the Mixed B division finals at the 18th annual Penticton Dragonboat Festival this past week.

This brand new team is comprised of

GOLF

The host club team of Sydney Clement, Erin Clement, Jenna Denton and Renee Gillard carded a net score of 60.1 to win the Summerland Golf and Country Club ladies’ 4-ball invitation­al scramble on Tuesday.

A total of 34 teams – including 10 from the Summerland club – took part in the annual event.

A Summerland team also finished second with Jackie Clement, Danielle Riley, Jodie Brennan and Linda Angstadt logging a 61.4. Other top Summerland teams included: 8th place: Janice Goll, Barb Oleschuk, Jan McLeod, Kathy Larkin (net 63.6).

10th place: Diana Leitch, Chris Haessig, Frances Colussi, Gill Lynge (net 64.2).

13th place: Lil Smith, Val Eibner, Marilyn Tamblyn, Linda Palmer (net 64.7).

The Ken Lintott foursome posted a 290 to earn a one-shot win at the Twin Lakes Golf Resort senior men’s day “red-white-blue” outing on Tuesday.

Other members of the squad were Norm Boucher, Barry Palmer and Chris Redman.

Second place at 291 went to Dave Myles, Larry Syskakis, Gerry Nimchuk and Dueane Sly.

Another shot off the pace at 292 were Glen Jolliffe, Lyle Lowenberge­r, Doug Coulter and Mark Dodge. individual­s who are new to the sport of dragon boating.

The team was formed out of continued interest for the sport, following an introducto­ry set of dragon boat lessons.

The team of Kim Goheen, Ron Murphy, Robert Smith, and “Mr. 50/50” Don Stinson carded a 114 to register a two-shot win at the Penticton Golf and Country Club senior men’s day “3-2-1 reverse waltz” competitio­n on Wednesday.

Tied for second place at 116 were Ken Anderson, Mike Whitehouse, Walter Tymovavich, and Bill Grant, and the team of Brent Logan, Bernie McCallum, Bill Brown, and Ritch Harvyl.

SOCCER

Goals by Grant Campbell and Tim Austen gave Brown Benefits a 2-0 victory over Penticton Dental Centre FC in Okanagan Oldtimers’ Soccer League 45-and-over division play on Monday at the Parkinson Rec Centre.

Campbell scored in the first half and Penticton had a great chance to tie it in the second as Jon Padgett fired over the bar on a penalty kick. Austen sealed the win late.

Brown’s (11-0-3) saw their run as champs come to an end with the Turn-Key Controls (14-0-1) clinching in a schedule that was abbreviate­d with several games cancelled due to wildfire smoke.

Penticton (9-5-2) closes out the regular season. It will be held this Saturday, at 11 a.m. All levels of paddling experience are welcome. Those interested are asked to meet at the Skaha Lake Park boathouse.

SLO-PITCH

The Penticton Men’s Slo-Pitch League pennant chase is going down to the wire with four teams in the hunt with just over a week to go.

The Sportsfrea­ks jumped into a three-way tie for first place with Wolfpack and Quest by sweeping two games on Tuesday — 22-21 over the Titans and 21-19 over the Lake Monsters at Lion’s Community Park.

The Sportsfrea­ks — winners of seven straight — also handed the defending champion Wolfpack their first loss of the season 15-12 on Thursday.

The Wolfpack is still in control though with a 15-1 record, Sportsfrea­ks are 15-2, Quest 15-3 and Titans fourth at 14-3. Each team plays 20 games.

Quest and Sportsfrea­ks do battle Sept. 18 at 9 p.m. at Lion’s, while Quest and Wolfpack meet in the final game of the regular season Sept. 20 at 9 p.m. at Lion’s.

In key games tonight, the Titans play a doublehead­er at 6 and 7:30 p.m. at Lion’s against Lancaster Lightning and Sandlot, respective­ly, while the Sportsfrea­ks play TDA Copper Mug Guzzlers at 7:30 p.m. at Dale Meadows 1 in Summerland.
