Couple thanked for all that jazz

-

Dear editor: Kudos to Michael and Beth Campbell and the Pentastic Jazz Festival.

Twenty two years ago the Campbells decided the city required an injection of visitors to support the economy, following the conclusion of the summer season.

Research indicated the investigation of a jazz festival with professional bands from Canada, the U.S. and Europe. A study at the Campbell’s personal cost revealed such a plan might fit the bill.

The operation filed under the Society Act then recognized a board of directors appointed to proceed with planning the event.

Grants were applied for but sponsors required in order to balance the budget. Michael Campbell then proceeded to search both private and corporate funding possibilities so that the jazz festival became the success that it is today.

This year there were over 130 volunteers to assist at the five venues. The Campbells have already begun the preparation for next year’s event which will be the 22nd Pentastic Jazz Festival.

My reason for singling out Michael and Beth is for the dedication to this event. Beth was a very popular mayor and Michael a two-year president of the chamber of commerce, a director with B.C. Tourism, amongst other involvements.

The majority of people are not aware of these facts and that is my reason for writing this letter. Thank you, Michael and Beth. Bill Slessor Penticton
